Ben Michaelis, Ph.D., is a psychologist, professional thought-partner, and the author of Your Next Big Thing: Ten Small Steps to Get Moving and Get Happy. In his private practice Dr. Michaelis works with a wide array of clients, including entrepreneurs, authors, actors, musicians, artists, and executives.
Dr. Michaelis is the author of numerous popular and scholarly articles. He is frequently featured as a mental health expert on various television and radio programs such as The Today Show, Fox News, MSNBC, and publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Vanity Fair, O The Oprah Magazine, Parents magazine, Women’s Health, Glamour, and many others.
In addition to his clinical work Dr. Michaelis has spearheaded several initiatives to improve the quality of mental health in New York City and beyond. In 2008, Dr. Michaelis co-founded The Clinicians Collective, one of New York’s largest cross-disciplinary organizations aimed at improving the quality of healthcare through encouraging dialogue and providing resources and education for clinicians . In 2016 Dr. Michaelis launched the YouTube series One Minute Diagnosis, which provides free one minute informational videos about common mental health disorders, which have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times and are currently in use by several non-profit and governmental organizations as instructional videos for their trainees.
Dr. Michaelis graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University (Columbia College) in 1995 and was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa the same year. Dr. Michaelis then worked at the Children’s Television Workshop (CTW) performing research with children for Sesame Street and The New Ghostwriter Mysteries. After several years at CTW he travelled to Nepal and India where he wrote, thought, and learned from Buddhist Monks in the Himalayas. He has been in private practice in NYC since 2004.
Charles Duhigg is the bestselling author of The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, which explores the science of habit formation in our lives, companies and societies. He’s also the author of Smarter Faster Better: The Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business, another bestseller.
Mr. Duhigg writes for The New Yorker, among other magazines, and for 11 years was a journalist at The New York Times, where he led the team that won the 2013 Pulitzer prize in explanatory journalism. He also authored “Adventures in Capitalism”, a business column that appeared bi-weekly in the Times, and hosted a Times podcast, Change Agent. He has won the George Polk Award (2007), the Gerald Loeb Award (2008), the National Journalism Award (2009) and other honors.
In addition to his reporting, Charles Duhigg is a regular contributor to television and radio, including the Newshour with Jim Lehrer, Frontline, Dr. Oz and various programs on CNBC and NPR. Before becoming a journalist, Duhigg worked in private equity and founded a healthcare company in his home state of New Mexico (and, for one terrifying day in 1999, was a bike messenger in San Francisco.) He is a graduate of the Harvard Business School and Yale College.
